CES and Security - Oil and Water, There's no sexy sizzle in consumer security
Thanks to my good friend, analyst Jon Arnold for his post, CES Perspective - Security Issues Being Glossed Over. Jon raises what I view as a huge issue, security. In pointing to the Globe and Mall article bu Shane Schick, Jon observes that there is an increased risk of security-related threats that the vendors aren't really talking about. That's all too true.
As Schick notes in his article, Vegas '07 heavy on fun -- but where's the safety?
Read both articles. They're insightful and make very important points. For me, here are some thoughts -
First, CES is the CONSUMER electronics show. That means all sizzle and no steak. Promote what's sexy and get consumers wound up about the future. CES is all about smoke and mirrors. Security isn't sexy. Enterprise concerns aren't sizzling. Security is, as always, an afterthought at most. If you're going to close the barn door, stampede the consumer horses first.
It serves as a reminder than I'm not, at my core, a commercial consumer. I look at the bigger picture because it's what I do for a living. And when looking at the bigger picture, shows like CES are actually irrelevant. It explains why I don't bother going to CES. It would be a fun party, but has incredibly limited business value.
It would have been nice to see toys, but I for one, am glad I skipped it.
