Juniper Networks and VoIP Security
A hat tip to VoIP News for the reminder about this announcement from Juniper Networks:
Juniper Networks Introduces New System to Bolster VoIP Security
Juniper Networks unveiled today a new security tool, the the Cable Dynamic Threat Mitigation tool, a solution that allows cable multiple systems operators (MSOs) to protect Voice over IP (VoIP) and SIP-based services against network security attacks.
The Cable Dynamic Threat Mitigation solution integrates Juniper's routing platforms, Intrusion Detection and Prevention (IDP) devices and SDX Service Deployment System. It works with any PacketCable Multimedia-compliant cable modem termination system (CMTS) to enable MSOs to quickly identify and isolate security threats so that infected customers and operations staff can be notified.
The intrusion detection and prevention device monitors for network attacks on a per-user, per-application, or on-demand basis, and detects offending traffic or a DDoS attack. It then notifies the SDX-300, which sends the appropriate policy to any Juniper Networks routing platform and/or third-party PacketCable Multimedia-qualified cable dynamic threat mitigation or metro routing platform. According to the nature of the threat, MSOs can choose to rate limit or filter traffic, drop the call, or redirect the user to a Web portal, and automatically re-establish service once the threat is eliminated.
Unlike Cisco, Juniper has really been pretty quiet in the VoIP space overall. Since every MSO in North America is looknig to leverage VoIP services to compete with the legacy telcos, this signals a new security tool the cable operators can use.
Juniper may bear watching in the VoIP space...
