The future of SIP. Is it that dark?

It's only a few days ago that I wrote Nortel and Pingtel - Acquisition Changes, looking at Nortel's latest acquisition.

This morning I read a post from Carl Ford that's made me think about this again.

The Law of Unintended Consequences

I want to take a moment to remember the days when Pingtel was the hope for IP phones that were standard compliant.

Jay Batson, Jim Hourihan, Steve Guthrie, Dan Petrie and the rest of the team represented some of the most clear thinking about where we were heading.

But executing on a vision is hard and delivering before the market is ready can be crushing. In the end the products deserved better.

The upshot for me was that I found myself nodding in agreement with Carl as I read. Then I hit this -

"So the acquistion of pingtel should be looked on as the death of a dream. "

I reread my own post and agree that I'm not keen on the acquisition being especially good for either company. This morning, I'm finding I'm agreeing with Carl and not thinking any of the bodes well for the future of SIP interoperability.
