Ken on eBay's Purchase of Skype

I was queried today about a using a comment I made several months ago in an analyst's article that's in progress.  Makes me think it's time to go read a couple of posts on this and revisit my thinking today.

Here's what they're going to cite -

Even today (2007), nearly two years after eBay’s purchase of Skype, independent consultant Ken Camp believes that Skype is doing “okay” as a stand-alone business, but eBay could have done as well buying a “ball-bearing manufacturer if that’s all they wanted (and for a lot less money).” At this point, the main benefit that eBay has gotten out of this deal is they prevented anyone else from buying Skype. However, that’s a pretty expensive end result, given they spent an entire year’s worth of their net revenue on Skype, asserts Camp.
