Skype Beta 3.0

If you're so inclined, you can Download Skype 3.0.0.106 for Windows 2000 or XP.

I confess I installed it and am taking a quick peek, then will revert quickly back to the production release. One problem I encounter with every Skype beta is that each beta release breaks every thrid party program I use to record Skype calls. So I install, test and remove betas frequently with Skype.

It's an ongoign source fo frustration to me that Skype isn't very friendly to the developers that add value to their product. Then again, they aren't very open to working with bloggers in general prior to release. They've got their own closed view and work on that from all I see. Skype, as a business team, seems very much a walled garden in that regard.

What's different at a glance

  • The tabbed interface is cleaner and crisper.
  • The Live Tab is in this version for Skypecasts. A nice feature that's been in earlier betas. Not one that I can use until they get to production because of problem described above.
  • Some minor changes in notifications but that was all I spotted in the Options setup
Looks like a nice, incremental improvement. All I see warranting the version upgrade to 3.0 is the Live tab. Everything else looks like minor incremental enhancements to me.

Off to uninstall and get back to a version that works properly with my other tools.
