VON Summaries for those of us who can't be there

I had a scheduling conflict and can't be at the VON conference currently underway in Boston, but thanks to colleagues who blog voraciously, here are some pointers to articles of interest related to the VON event with brief excerpts.

IM Presence Round Table
  from Alec Saunders.

  • Jeff Bonforte, Director of Voice Product Management, Yahoo!
  • Dan Casey, Director, Windows Live VoIP and Messenger Product Management, Microsoft
  • Mike Jazayeri, Product Manager, Real-Time Communications & Google Talk, Google
  • Ragui Kamel, Sr. Vice President & General Manager, AOL Voice Services, America Online
  • Nitzan Shaer, Director, Mobile Devices, Skype
I referred to Ragui Kamel as "scary smart" the other day. Jeff Bonforte is too. This looks like the single biggest session I hate to have missed myself. Alec summarized Ragui's synopsis of what five things we can expect ahead::
  1. Great interworking, more openness
  2. More open platform, more third party developers
  3. A greater move toward nomadic use of the network.
  4. An integration of IM, and voice into Applications.
  5. We’ll all be sitting on a panel at VON2

Unyte: The First of Many Chance Encounters at VON
, also from Alec gives a glimpse into a new collaboration tool to work with Skype. I added WebDialogs and Will Stofega to the list of people I want to interview in the near future.

Phil Wolff, ever focused on Skype asks about Skypenomics at VON. Phil raises some interesting questions and makes some solid points as usual.

Fall VON: Voice-over-IM Gains Momentum from Telecommunications Magazine describes how VoxLib has taken the VoIP space and advanced it one square
with a VOX for Skype offering that enables users to access
Skype through any fixed or mobile device while even, in the
second iteration, when they’re away from their desktops. Also discussed by Alec in Vox for Skype.

There were other stories and announcements coming out of VON today, but those make for a pretty substantive day 1 at VON.
