VON Summaries for Day Two

XConnect announced at the VON in Boston that it has acquired IPeerX, a leading US based VoIP peering company owned by industry-leader  pulver.com.

In my reading, friend Alec Saunders is leading the way in blogging the VON event. Here are two morning posts from Alec:
Jeff Pulver's Keynote Jeff talks a lot about video
Ted Leonsis Keynote He's the Vice Chairman at AOL and showed their new video portal

Clearly Video on the Net has become a big piece of VON.

An Interesting Conversation from Adam Uzelac on the Global Crossing blog - I used to teach technical training classes for Global Crossing as a client and they've got some very, very good people. I don't just say that because I trained them either. If you think Global Crossing is just a bandwidth company, you might peek at this brief eye opener.

Paul Kapustka does his ever excellent job in blogging important hightlights on the vonosphere with 'Video on the Net' a hit at Fall 2006 VON and Vonage alive and well, Citron says (Note: I'm digesting this a bit further and expect I'll have some other thoughts on Mr. Citron's view through the rose colored glasses.)

As if often the case, some of the keenest insights from VON come from one of the brightest minds in the industry, Martin Geddes.

Buzz trends

Treading the exhibition floor, here’s my gut feel on the buzzword trends at VON based on having come for the last few years.

  • Session border controllers and media gateways. Way down. About time too.
  • IMS. Flat — looks like the hype cycle has reached its peak.
  • Monitoring and testing — “quality of experience”. Up. Looks like the practicalities are getting more traction.
  • Video. Massive increase in focus here.
  • VoIP. Not talked about so much on its own.
  • User equipment. On the up — quite a lot more and interesting VoIP handsets and modems/routers.
There are some really important nuggets in this brief excerpt. They're in bold (Martin's bold, not mine, but I agree with him) about the nuance of some of those issues.

And Martin makes a hugely important observation in closing his post - Caveat investor.

Tomorrow Von is Where the Bloggers are. There's a bloggers panel including Jeff Pulver, Brough Turner, Andy Abramson, and Dan York. I'm pretty sure Alec Saunders will be in there too. Other bloggers we know are at VON include Martin Geddes, Russell Shaw, Ted Wallingford, and Jim Courteny. And Andrew Baron from RocketBoom is there. That could be the most dynamic and animated session any VON has ever seen. Wish I was there.
