Skype Certifies McAfee - It's All About Spin

I've seen both postive and negative responses to this -

Press Release
McAfee, Inc. and Skype Collaborate
Thursday August 3, 4:54 pm ET
Skype Certifies McAfee Internet Security Suite 2006 LUXEMBOURG & SANTA CLARA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 3, 2006--McAfee, Inc. (NYSE:MFE - News), the global leader in Intrusion Prevention and Security Risk Management, and Skype, the global Internet communications company, today announced that the McAfee® Internet Security Suite 2006, McAfee VirusScan® 2006 and McAfee Personal Firewall(TM) 2006 products have been Skype Certified(TM). This confirms that these McAfee security products meet Skype's strict standards for security, quality and usability.

Both Skype and McAfee are committed to helping Internet users protect the information stored on their PCs. Now Skype Certified, McAfee Internet Security Suite and VirusScan provide added security for all data on a person's computer. For example, files sent using the Skype file transfer function can be easily scanned by the Skype certified McAfee products, adding an extra layer of protection to documents shared in an already secure environment. Skype calls and chats have always been and will remain private and protected using Skype's encryption technology.

If you read this wrongly, Skype, who I've taken to task for many issues in breaching corporate network security, has stamped as certified McAfee as a security solution. That could lead to all sorts of entertaining, but misleading stirring the pot. Don't read it that way like some folks have.

Read through the spin. McAfee now has a tool set that's certified to work for scanning Skype file transfers. Or, in other words, even with Skype's proprietary encryption, they've worked closely enough with at least one vendor that some level of assurance can now be provided.
