Why Fixed Mobile Convergence is Important
I've written a little recently about FMC, mostly in conjunction with IMS solutions. But fixed mobile convergence brings a new set of values to the business enterprise. In the VoIP environment, we see VoWiFi or VoWLAN solutions coming on strong. FMC brings the mechanisms for moving VoIP and cellular telephony to a new level of both mobility and convergence, especially when coupled with presence management online. That's an incredibly powerful combination set that isn't yet widely mature and deployed. The solutions that are available offer some incredible productivity gains.
When I read about mobility issues, one of the people I follow closely is Dan Taylor on his Mobile Enterprise Weblog. Here are some bullet points he offered today in a post by Nicholas McQuire, Senior Analyst, Yankee GroupThe Emerging Effect of Enterprise Fixed-Mobile Convergence
The benefits FMC brings to enterprise end users are significant:
- A single device with integrated PBX and PIM capability
- Personal/private number separation or a single number that enables presence capabilities and location transparency
- Single integrated voicemail box
- Single work/personal directory and look up functionality
- Mobile call recording features
- Fixed/PBX functionality on mobile devices, such as mobile conference calling, call transfers and call waiting
