Two more stories describe Skype as a "problem"

Spotted two more stories that describe Skype as a problem on corporate networks. I've written about this issue several times. Here are two more examples.

From Techworld.com

'IT nightmare' Skype burrows into networks
By John E. Dunn, Techworld

A snapshot of large US companies has found that 'viral' applications such as VoIP, Instant messaging (IM), webmail and P2P applications are now endemic on many networks.

Compiled by insider security startup Reconnex from 1.1 Terabytes of data, the figures showed alarmingly high use of these applications, regardless of company security policies.

Skype, in particular, was found to be present in 22 percent of networks, one of the first times anyone has managed to put a hard figure on its use. In most cases, companies were not aware of how widespread the application had become, or had no means of tracking it.

And another story from DigitalJournal.com

Skype Presents Massive Threat to Communications World, But Will Consumers Take the Bait?
By Christopher Hogg

Digital Journal — It sure will be interesting to watch to see just how screwed up the telecommunications world is about to get: Skype, eBay Inc.’s Internet-calling subsidiary, announced it will no longer charge users for making calls from a PC to a landline or cellphone anywhere in North America.

The company which was bought by eBay for a whopping $2.6 billion last year, previously offered PC-to-landline calling for only two cents per minute and PC-to-PC calling has always been free. Its new SkypeOut service will be free until the end of the 2006 (calls from North America to phones in other countries will still incur charges).
There's nothing particularly new in either story, but seeing these stories proliferate week after week raises a question about the other side of the coin.

We know users like it, but does anyone on the corporate side of life see Skype as a good thing?
