Sightspeed's new release and a coming podcast conversation
Like many folks I know, I'm a big fan of SightSpeed
personally. If I have a complaint, it's that too many people I takl with don't use it, so I'm compelled to use Skype, Gizmo, or MSN often. The peril of a half-dozen open communitcation tools all at one time. Like several folks, I got an advanced notice about the
upcoming SightSpeed 5.0 beta being made available this Wendesday. This new release includes
- Make and receive voice calls to/from the PSTN, including 800 number support
- Voice-only mode for PC to PC calling
- Enhanced contact list views
- Improved video codecs--the existing codec is pretty good, can't wait to see what the new codec looks like!
- Ability to select video codec in use
- Ability to import from Plaxo (won't be available until the final 5.0 release or a point release thereafter).

I think I've read somewhere that SightSpeed has always used SIP for it's signalling - so I will presume that the SightSpeed-to-PSTN feature uses SIP2. But do you know if it is using a SightSpeed service or can I use it as a softphone for my own VoIP provider (we use Asterisk 1.2.7.1 at work)
