The Benefits of Technology Disruption

When the early telephone network was being built, there was a vision of what it would become. Connections between every home and business. In the early days, there was great fear that the growing telephone network would look like this.

Through innovation and disruption, we evolved with multiplexing and the TDM phone network didn't wind up looking like our worst fears. Today disruption and technologies like VoIP continue to shape our service networks.

And it made for a good opportunity to share this old picture I found in my collection.

Ken is right - the Innovator’s Dilemma provides fantastic insight into what is happening in today's telecom markets. It points out the fact that yesterday's innovators won’t be the ones to bring true innovation that fully leverage the potential of the Internet to deliver VoIP and other rich multimedia services. So, don’t expect softswitch vendors like Sonus to simplify the complexities of delivering multiple real-time services over a shared IP network. Softswitch vendors are too steeped in helping their customers IP enable today’s phone network so that service providers can fully leverage their huge investment in their existing networks. That creates a drag coefficient on their R&D efforts and does not allow them to reach critical mass on building the solution for an all IP environment.
