Asterisk and some Research
When we explore VoIP options, many of us have requirements that may preclude open source solutions. Asterisk is, to me, one such solution. It may the the right fit for the right business segment, but it's not without flaws. And it's not a universal solution. Depending on the nature of your business, some solutions raise more problems than the generate.
I plead some lack of complete information about Asterisk in particular, driven by it's nature as just a poor fit for most of the clients I work with. It's just clearly not been the solution of choice in several cases.
A recent email I received has driven me to explore a bit more. There's clearly some question as to the GPL vs. commercial nature of the code, or parts of it. There seem to be several variants, more than I'd realized, some listed as GPL open source, and some that have been sold.
As I said, I'm reading...studying...learning. While I'm impressed with the operation of the system I set up myself, I have little use for it today and it was primarily for testing purposes. I'll be interested to see what I learn about the evolutionary family tree of Asterisk as a whole.
