I agree with Russell on ShoreTel

I just spotted this from Russell Shaw over on the ZDNet. Russell is one of thoe people I've paid attention to for quite a long time. I was really pleased to get to meet him and share a fabulous dinner and wine tasting last year.

ShoreTel’s IPO should elevate their competitive posture in enterprise VoIP

You may not have heard of ShoreTel, so some factoidness to get you started.

I consider them a leader in the Enterprise VoIP space. ShoreTel 7 has some new features, including Programmable Toolbars that enable end users to execute telephony applications via the Personal Call Manager as well as the Contact Center.

There’s also a new automated call forwarding functionality that permits repeated transfer of a message until it has been actually heard, as well as some additional end-user ring tones personalization capability.

I agree with Russell. You may not be familiar with ShoreTel, but they're a leader and have been for quite a while now. My own recent posts here about ShoreTel include:
There's a bigger story in the works now - ShoreTel's IPO. They're hoping to raise $90 million, most of which they plan to use for acquisitions. That sends two messages. First, that ShoreTel is strong and healthy. How the IPO fares will provide a great barometer of the current market climate for unified communications sector IPOs. It also syas to me that they're looking outward and where they can expand. That's what leaders do, and it's nice to see ShoreTel grow and mature.

I still say it's not the thinking man's solution.

The incessant need to keep adding boxes to support more users, their phones are ugly (IMHO), and the whole thing falls apart if the Windows host isn't running.

Fine for small shops but with the major inroads SIP is making inside on network as well as over the Internet they had better make some major changes fast.
