Ofcom Regulation - The Winds of Change?

Will over at Rebtel dropped me a note about this blog post and it warrants mention here.

Ofcom Regulation - The beginning of the end for the mobile cartel

Telecoms regulator Ofcom has been urged by network operators to make further cuts to 3’s  termination rates, following its £500m crackdown on mobile call connection charges at the end of March.

From Sunday (April 1), networks have been subject to new charge controls, which limit the fee they can charge other telecoms companies for connecting calls on their mobile network. The reductions will be phased in during several stages between now and 2011.

As Will pointed out in his note to me a few points of note:
  • Ofcom regulation in the UK has slashed network termination rates by £500m a year
  • O2, Orange call for stricter regulation of 3 termination rates which have been reduced by 45% to 5.9p per minute
  • This change is the beginning of the end for the mobile cartel
I agree with his premise that the days of customers paying through the nose for their mobile service are numbered. It will take time, but the EU clamping down on roaming charges, coupled with Ofcom's enforced price cuts, signals that the times are changing. Or at least that changes are in the wind.
