Gizmo on the Nokia N800 Internet Tablet

Regular commenter Mike asked this question in comments on my Nokia Devices and My Mobility post.

Ken,

Any SIP softphone capability other than the gtalk?

This would make it truely killer...

Thanks,
Mike

I replied that I'd post something, hence this post about Gizmo on the N800.

Everyone's been talking about the new N800 and how well it supports Gtalk, including video calls. But the N800 also has a really nice Gizmo client for SIP support. Unlike the Gizmo client onthe N80i, this is a fully featured Gizmo client supporting all the same functionality that the desktop client supports, at least from what I can tell.

Click the screenshots for full size views on Flickr.

Here's the Gizmo login screen. In my case, it's really a splash screen because I have Gizmo set to log in when I start it. You can't see the tabbed interface because I forgot to minimize the tray widget for the screen capture utility, but you can access account configuration info from this screen, or later from within the program

Here's a fully featured Gizmo client complete with presence and IM capability, just like on the PC.

I've used this Gizmo client on the N800 to make calls to people on other N800s, PC Gizmo users, outbound to the PSTN, and inbound frm the PSTN to Gizmo via Grand Central. It works at least as well as the PC client. On a WiFi connection, the voice quality is superb, especially for a small handheld device.

I've successfully made Gizmo VoIP calls when paired with the N73 over a GPRS connection, but the quality is generally jsut not very usable in my limited experience. Then again, that's why I carry a mobile phone when I'm not in WiFi range.
