NEC Buying Sphere Communications

Here's an interesting piece that caught my eye. I'll have to chide my friends at TechImage and track down Todd Landry at Sphere to see what I can learn about this. I'm guessing Todd's the VP Brian Riggs spoke with although he didn't name names.

Whither Sphere?
Congrats to Eric Krapf for drawing attention to the near hidden news that NEC Corp. is shelling out $42 million for Chicago-based IP PBX developer Sphere Communications. I thought it odd that NEC didn’t make more of a splash about this. No press release, no press conference, no briefings for interested parties in the journalistic and analytical circles. The most detailed information on the acquisition I’ve received until today was from a conversation with Sphere’s marketing vice president, who spoke to me about the acquisition but only under NDA.

As a PBX vendor, NEC played in traditional PBX space, but they were never a highly visible player or market leader. I lost sight of them. But this would indicate they're still kicking around. I'll do some digging.
