As VoIP increases in popularity and use, it becomes more and more important for carriers to be able to provide a link from the traditional phone numbering system to VoIP endpoints. This way, a VoIP carrier can route customers’ calls directly from their IP network to those of another carriers, without going through the PSTN. This can lead to huge cost savings for the VoIP providers. This method, termed ENUM, or electronic numbering, was originally implemented using third parties who specialized in this service.
