Press Release: O1 Communications Delivers Hosted VoIP and Wholesale Carrier Services with Acme Packet

Here's some info on on how Acme Packet’s session border control platform enables O1 Communications to use their own ENUM registry to make IP to IP calls, without the need for costly connections to the PSTN.

As VoIP increases in popularity and use, it becomes more and more important for carriers to be able to provide a link from the traditional phone numbering system to VoIP endpoints. This way, a VoIP carrier can route customers’ calls directly from their IP network to those of another carriers, without going through the PSTN. This can lead to huge cost savings for the VoIP providers. This method, termed ENUM, or electronic numbering, was originally implemented using third parties who specialized in this service. But as ENUM becomes more useful and widespread, some carriers are opting to create their own ENUM databases, effectively eliminating the middleman.

O1 Communications did just that, creating their own ENUM database. But in order to connect to the voice peering fabric, they need a device to manage the sessions between their network and other IP networks. Enter Acme Packet, and their Net-Net Session Border Controller platform. The SBC product family enables seamless connections between IP network borders, while satisfying critical requirements in five key areas: security, service reach maximization, SLA assurance, revenue and profit protection and regulatory compliance.

In the next few weeks, I'll be chattning with both 01 and Acme Packet to learn more about the new ways IP carriers are bypassing the PSTN and creating their very own network of peers, and how Acme Packet provides a linkage enabling this.

Net-Net session border controllers provide O1 with advanced security, ENUM and service control features, enabling delivery of customized IP services

BURLINGTON, MA, FEBRUARY 6, 2007 — Acme Packet® (NASDAQ: APKT), the leader in session border control solutions, today announced that O1 Communications, a leading California provider of next-generation telecommunications services, has deployed Acme Packet’s Net-Net® session border controllers (SBCs) to support multiple applications to small- and medium-sized enterprises throughout the West Coast and to wholesale service providers worldwide. The Net-Net SBCs provide the secure and seamless interconnection of IP networks necessary for the delivery of high quality IP Centrex, business trunking and PSTN termination services.

Acme Packet Net-Net SBCs enable a comprehensive combination of functionality and benefits for O1, including:
  • Security features, including denial of service (DoS) attack protection, topology hiding and access control, to protect O1’s network from malicious attacks
  • Routing and ENUM that enables O1’s “Best Voice Path” routing, which takes into account quality, redundancy and throughput to determine a least-cost routing (LCR) model to optimize network usage
  • Call admission control and QoS marking that enables O1 to deliver high call quality and assure the service level agreements (SLAs) of its customers
  • VPN network separation for O1’s customers, so that all signaling and media is secured within their own VPN
“At O1, we pride ourselves on delivering customized applications and services for our customers. As this targeted approach attracts more and more customers, we can be confident that the scalable Net-Net platform will grow right along with us,” said Brad Jenkins, CEO of O1. “Our customers will continue to reap the benefits of exceptional service levels and highly secure applications afforded by Acme Packet’s Net-Net SBCs.”

“O1’s MPLS network is an essential element of the company’s success, so it was paramount that they leverage a session border control solution that would support and further strengthen that network,” explained Seamus Hourihan, vice president of marketing and product management for Acme Packet. “Acme Packet’s Net-Net SBCs help O1 maintain secure, high quality, optimized networks, allowing O1 to focus on expanding their customer base and developing new services.”
