Rumblings of Impending Pain

I thought I'd take a minute to post some quiet rumblings that are making the rounds for those of us who listen in quiet spaces. I've heard these in more than one place and I'm trying to confirm details, but given my humble roots here, I think it unlikely that I'll get substantive confirmation or denial of either until the news is either real or fades quietly. Then again, I've got grassroots connections at both companies and am still trying.

Cisco and Avaya are both rumored to be gearing up to lay people off. Cisco hasn't laid off in several years now that I'm aware of - the lats being around 2001 or so.

Avaya, on the other hand, comes out of pieces Lucent Technologies, from the bowels of AT&T, with roots back into the old Bell System. I don't know when Avaya last laid people off, but the history would indicate layoffs reach deep into their roots.

It's not a good day for our environment if these two are really facing layoffs at this time of year. Let's hope for the best.
