« SIPERA VIPER LAB REVEALS TOP 5 VOIP VULNERABILITIES IN 2007 | Main | News Release: Telenor Srbija chooses Nokia Siemens Networks as a sole supplier »

Coming between now and the end of the year

We're quickly diving into the holiday season, and news traffic is lightening up tremendously. Today's Friday and I expect we'll see a little news early in the week next week, but much of our industry will stay fairly quiet through into the new year.

Here's a couple of things you'll see between now and then, and some things to look forward to ahead.

First, the podcast chat with Sachin Joglekar at the Sipera VIP Lab that I've been working on looks like it's a go for next Wednesday. With some fortunate timing, I hope to have that all ready and posted online by Wednesday evening. We'll talk about the VIPER Lab in general and make sure readers and listeners know who they are and what they do. I also hope to talk with Sachin a bit about the Top 5 VoIP vulnerabilities for 2007 I posted earlier. More interesting to me will be Sachin's take on what we need to look out for next year that hasn't been a problem in the past.I'm curious what he thinks the next big problem will be.

I'm working on my own post of what to watch in 2008. I'm working up a mix of technology trends and companies to watch. Since my comment that 2007 was the year VoIP became plumbing caught some attention, 'll be watching real closely to see what reactions my views of the year ahead garner from other analysts and writers.

I've got a couple of other podcast chats I'm trying to put together during the holiday time with people I think are key movers and shakers in the unified communications space. I'm not naming names yet because they're friends and I'm trying to impinge on their quiet time during the holidays.

The Realtime Unifed Communications Community here is one of several communities produced by Realtimepublishers.com. I had the privlege of being the first community moderator, but I'm joined by colleagues in other areas too. Here's the complete array of Realtime Communities.

I'm planning on inviting Dan, Bob, Rebecca and Greg to join me and do a group roundtable podcast from all the Realtime Community editors. My hope is that the five of us can give our views on 2007 in review and what we see ahead for 2008. I'll keep you posted on that. I expect I'll be working logistics on that for a while, and we'll likely all podcast it on our individual community sites when it's done.

On a more personal note, I'm in the process of ramping up a new venture with my partner Sheryl Breuker that will focus on social media, mobile and casual computing, and some human aspects of these emerging technologies. It's area I believe may lead to yet another Realtime community with a different angle on things. We we unveil our website and go live in the next few days, I'll mention it here for those of you who might be interested.

One thing I'll be doing more of next year, actually I think we'll all be doing more of next year, is audio and video. Podcasts, video blog posts, and I'm especially excited about video from events (field trips and conferences). I'm also checking into the idea of some realtime streaming video, complete with chatroom and other networking tools.

2007 has been an interesting and exciting year, but in many ways it's been stable and somewhat predictable. I think 2008 is going to be a much wilder ride.
