News from Verizon - Hell Freezes Over. Pigs Grow Wings.

I've read a number of the posts around the net about Verizon's announcement that they're opening their cellular network. Naturally I stole the title of the post and the picture from a friend, but the larger story for me came today with Verizon's second punch. Today Verizon Wireless announced that they're going to move to Long Term Evolution (LTE). LTE is part of the 3GPP project and looks to be the open standard successor to GSM technology. Trials start in 2008, and vendors are all commiting to releasing LTE gear in 2009.

LTE, can tehoretically deliver somewhere from 100- 140 Mbps to a handset. Yeah, to a mobile handset. That's better than what anyone I know can even get to the home today.

I don't know about you, but wireless broadband has significantly changed my life in terms of how and where I work. This sort of performance to the mobile would have as great an impact on my work as any technology change in the past 10 years.
