Update on Ooom from Alec Saunders

Late yesterday Alec spent some time on the phonee with Andrew Frame from Ooma. As you'll recall, this new offering rippled through the net yesterday, raising lots of conversation and reaction, mostly negative.

Ooma revisited

For 40 minutes last night I had Ooma CEO and Founder Andrew Frame on the phone. I didn't get to talk with Ashton Kutcher, like Mike did, but that was okay. Ashton wasn't going to add anything to this conversation. My goal was to get some of the many technology questions about Ooma answered. In advance I forwarded a list of questions. Andrew answered them, and more.

Several colleagues have indicated they've got test units on the way, and I'll leave it to them to test. I see issues with CallerID, and far larger issues with security. Given some basic technical skills, I'm convinced that a marginally competent technologist could be listening in on phone conversations within hours. And I've got other concerns about the security aspects of the device as well.

Read Alec's post for the story and follow the conversation on the net. I dont' see Ooma as something I'll be investing any effort in beyond following the commentary.

Note: My focus is always on business and enterprise. Ooma doesn't fit anywhere in business unified communications. It's clearly a consumer play.
