The Nokia 9000 - Can it gain traction?

Andy asked an interesting question yesterday -

Did Nokia Launch A Real Blackberry Threat ?

For those of us who ever had a Nokia 9000 series phone in the past and wished it did more, the new E90 announced at 3GSM today may be a dream come true.

If TruPhone, AbbeyPhone and GizmoProject can be made to run on this, and if GoodLink comes out running on it as it does on the E62 already, there may be a real threat to the BlackBerry for reasons that only a user of all of the above could appreciate.

I don't think it's a Blackberry threat. I don't think it's a threat to Windows 5 Mobile. I don't think it's a threat to the E-series Nokia phones.

With a sticker price of $1,000, I'm not sure I'd agree that the Nokia 9000 is a threa to anything. It's priced so far abolve what a Blackberry costs with a service plan that there's no comparison at this point. It's so far below a tablet or micro-noteboook PC in capability, that it doesn't threaten them.

I agree that it's the coolest geek toy we've seen, perhaps ever. Those of us who are heavily invested in our toys and tools are the target market, but I'm not sure this device will ever gain critical mass beyond the leading, bleeding adge early adopters. It's positioned at a price point that ensures minimal adoption and acceptance I think.
