Sightspeed Continues to Gain Critical Mass

I've chatted a couple of times with Peter Csathy at Sightspeed, and naturally follow the news and blogs pretty closely on the company. I watch a lot of companies closely, but especially those I think have a really solid winning proposition. This post on The Alarm Clock, naturally caught my eye

SightSpeed Wants To Put Hurt on Skype

Berkeley-based SightSpeed has been around for a while and its management has good pedigrees, but they have been on the sidelines of Web video+voice calling. Thanks to recent distribution deals with CreativeLabs and Logitech, SightSpeed's pickup has been dramatic of late. It doesn't hurt that SightSpeed has been getting great reviews in the consumer tech press. It is fair to say that they have been anointed as the startup to watch as a the contender to Skype's supremacy.

In my conversations with Peter, there's never been talk of aggressively targeting Skype, but clearly Sightspeed offers a competitive solution. I don't agree that they've bene on the sidelines. I think Sightspeed leads in the technology. They're a small, but growing, company that's bringing a powerful collaboration tool to the market. They've been knuckled down in development work, embracing SIP, adding PSTN connectivity, and more to come in the future.

With the latest news of Net2Phone filing another lawsuit against Skype, the ongoing concerns about Skype security in the corporate network, and Sightspeed's  exciting plans in the works, they are definitely a company to watch.
