Reader/Listener Question: Do you know if there are any non vendor specific certifications for SIP based VOIP?
I got a great question in email this morning from a listener to the podcasts. I'm sure I can't fully answer it, but I'm going to undertake a bit of research. I'm sharing it here because you all may have some input on training and certifications options I'm not aware of.
Do you know if there are any non vendor specific certifications for SIP based VOIP?
I can't think of anything off the top of my head, but will do some digging.

Hi Ken, there are no independent certifications for SIP. As I'm sure you know, SIP isn't WiFi, it is a framework protocol much like http that defines primatives that can be used in a myriad of ways by developers. The SIP community thusfar has resisted all efforts to create a "SIP Certified" sticker on the belief that it would stifle innovation.
However, outside of the features standardized within SIP, there are three feature packs of services defined by the SIP forum.
Also, The SIP forum also run an interoperability event called SIPit, but these are generally only open to vendors seeking to test interoperability of their SIP implementations.
Individuals can ask their vendors if their implementations of feature sets are based on SIP Forum agreements, and if they have been tested for interoperability, if they want to ensure a high likelihood of interoperability.
Finally, numerous vendors have third party partnership programs to certify phones to work with their call management systems. Check with your vendors for details.

Thanks Irwin. You're of course right on the money and made me realize that I perhaps read the question entirely wrong. Somehow in my mind I was thinking of training and certifications for individuals to certify that they know and understand SIP solutions at a broader level and are qualified to work on them. That's the path I was going to investigate rather than actual protocol certifications. I'll send the reader a query to make sure, but thanks so much for chiming in with your always valuable input and for setting me on what's more likely the right track!

Update - I did go back and check. The original email asked about engineer certifications in the subject line. What we're looking for is non-vendor specific training in SIP overal that leads to some form of certification to indicate VoIP/SIP qualifications for individuals.
