VoIP and Tech Talk at RIT

This tech talk at RIT caught my eye because I've had interactions with several folks who teach there or have in the past.

(May 5, 2006) — More than 150 people gathered at Rochester Institute of Technology this morning to discuss the future of Voice over Internet Protocol, or VoIP, phone service.

The conference discussed the rates of adoption of the service and how consumers are using it.

Maggie Wilderotter, chief executive of Citizens Communications, parent company of Frontier, told the audience in her keynote remarks that VoIP providers need to de-mystify the service for consumers.

"Our customers don't buy technology," Wilderotter said, "they buy features and benefits.

Now neither Citizens Communications nor Frontier are what we've view as the large telco monoliths that prevail in the voice communications industries. I taught some classes for Frontier several years back. They're regionally focussed and have faced their fair share of challenges.

But the truth is, with the execption of we technologists who buy for the sake of exploring new things, nobody buys technology. Nobody. That's a point too often overlooked in tech sales.
