Investment Advice from one of the best

I confess, I have multiple posts in progess that I'm trying to get together to publish here, and the cover a variety of areas. This is a short one simply to share a non-technical resource that I find valuable in areas both within telecommunications and in other areas.

If you don't real any of the venture capitalists at all, but you follow telecom (either VoIP or traditional telecom), Tom Evslins's Fractals of Change blog really should be among your must read RSS feeds. Tom has a depth of experience in the telecom sector that unrivaled by every other active blogger. He's just a resource we can't afford to miss. Today he posted this -

Don’t Buy Telco Stock – That Includes Vonage

The telegram business disappeared last month with barely a whimper. The telephone call business is going to go the same way sooner rather than later. Not a good time to invest in that business. BTW, once-upon-a-time AT&T stood for American Telephone and Telegraph. Now, it’s just letters; it doesn’t stand for anything.

I’m a Vonage user but I’m not planning to buy Vonage stock. Vonage is in the telephone call business and that business is in its last decade if not last few years. They sell phone calls – cheap. Used to be a good business; I was in it myself. But the phone call business is poised to disappear. That’s not good for investors in telephone companies whether that company is Verizon, at&t, or Vonage.
I haven't had a chance to fully digest all of Tom's points myself. I'm no VC. I'm not even a very investor in telecom. What I am, or at least try to be, is someone who pays close attention to the industry and listens to good advice. Tom only hands out pretty darn good advice. If you're an investor, thinking of investing, or watching the telecom sector closely, you should really study this post.
